The economic crisis, initiated by the collapse of Lehman Brothers, turned out to be stronger and broader than anyone anticipated. It spread from banking and financial sectors in the U.S., especially to Europe, and to a lesser extent to Asia. Recognizing the significance of this issue, the Jagiellonian University SYLFF Fellows Association (JUSFA) invited representatives of counterpart organizations worldwide to a scientific conference titled "Europe and the World in Crisis: Challenges and Opportunities."

The conference was the main event during the 20th anniversary celebrations of the SYLFF program at the Jagiellonian University. The festivities took place in the Main Hall of Collegium Maius on September 7, 2012. The primary organizers were the Nippon Foundation, the Tokyo Foundation, the Jagiellonian University SYLFF Steering Committee, and the Jagiellonian University SYLFF Fellows Association. Among the distinguished guests were representatives of the Tokyo Foundation and the Nippon Foundation, including its President, Mr. Yohei Sasakawa, son of Mr. Ryoichi Sasakawa, who was the principal funder of SYLFF in 1992.

Other attendees included university authorities, such as Rector Wojciech Nowak and Vice-Rector Andrzej Mania, members of the JU Steering Committee, and SYLFF Fellows from Poland and various countries. Based on presentations and discussions held during the conference, eight SYLFT fellows from five nations (Hungary, Indonesia, Latvia, Portugal, and Poland) decided to prepare a set of papers analyzing both national and multilateral dimensions of the economic crisis, including its social, political, and cultural ramifications.

These peer-reviewed papers form this monograph, titled "The World in Economic Crisis," which serves as a valuable contribution to future academic discussions on the subject. The book is authored by Marcin Grabowski and Pawel Laidler and published by Wydawnictwo Uniwersytetu Jagiellońskiego in 2012.
